A Disruptive Protein: That Protect Soils, Rainforests and Oceans

We continue to address one of the most urgent challenges facing global food systems: the developing protein gap. By 2030, an estimated one billion people are expected to lack access to sufficient protein, placing growing pressure on industries to find scalable, sustainable and nutritionally effective solutions. As demand rises, aquaculture has become the fastest-growing food production system of the last decade, playing an increasingly important role in feeding the world.

Yet the sector faces a major contradiction at the heart of its supply chain. Aqua feed - the feed used to nourish farmed fish, which in turn feeds people - remains heavily dependent on ingredients linked to deforestation and the depletion of finite natural resources. These inputs place additional pressure on the very systems that regulate climate, protect biodiversity and sustain long-term food security. For Rare Earth Global, that challenge points to the need for a disruptive alternative: a protein source capable of meeting demand while helping to protect soils, rainforests and oceans rather than undermining them.

The company believes that solution lies in hemp. As a regenerative crop with strong nutritional potential, hemp offers a route to more sustainable aquafeed formulations that can reduce reliance on environmentally damaging ingredients. We are proud to be the only company in the world to have completed long-term growth trials replacing those destructive inputs with sustainably produced hemp seed for aquaculture. This achievement represents a major step forward in demonstrating that lower-impact feed systems can be both credible and commercially relevant.

Last week, the team met with senior management teams from a number of its Norway-based customers, reinforcing the growing interest in reliable and scalable alternatives for the aquaculture sector. These discussions highlighted both the urgency of the challenge and the market readiness for practical solutions that can deliver environmental and commercial value together.

At Rare Earth Global, the mission is clear: to help reshape aquaculture with a regenerative protein source that supports food production without compromising the planet’s key carbon sinks. As global demand intensifies, the company remains committed to scaling a solution the world increasingly needs.
