Top 5 Featured: A Global Sustainable Innovation

StartUs Insights, a Vienna based Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Platform chose Rare Earth Global as a Top 5 (Plastic Free) Solution Impacting the Construction Industry. We were chosen from 1,478 startups who provide sustainable alternatives, with companies from the US, UK, Scandinavia and Europe featured heavily in their analysis. The StartUs Discovery Platform is used by corporates including Samsung, Nestlé, Siemens, Bayer and Magna who are looking to discover emerging technologies created by startups and scaleups globally.

The importance of creating more sustainable solutions for the construction industry is highlighted by the impact cement has on the environment as it produces around 2.5 billion tonnes of CO2 per year and causes up to 8% of all global man-made carbon emissions. Our construction materials made from the industrial hemp plant are carbon negative, as we offset any emissions from material production with carbon locked into the hemp through photosynthesis, absorbing more through product use and then stored within the material for the full lifetime of the product (which can be up to hundreds of years).

In addition to being one of nature’s most effective tools at carbon sequestration, our hemp materials make use of one the strongest natural fibres in existence today - hemp fibres. Hemp fibre biocomposites make it feasible for our products to become a major force in construction and be a commercially viable alternative to present material solutions. Our hempcrete can be used as an insulation sandwich in cross laminated bamboo to create a structural frame for buildings and these innovations create a blueprint for sustainable material collaboration.
